The Relevance of the Sinewave
As we breathe in a sinewave pattern, if we look at a graph of the volume of air in our lungs, we can see that it follows a sinusoidal pattern as well.
But it doesn’t end there.
The term “cardiorespiratory system” exists because there is a close connection between the lungs and the heart. That connection will become obvious with what I am going to show you next.
The heart beats at a certain number of times per minute. Let’s say 60 times. Either way, the heart doesn’t stay at that value for long, it is constantly beating faster or slower. This is the normal behavior of a heart.
But when subjected to stress and other negative emotions, this variability is erratic. As you can imagine, this is not a preferred state.
On the other hand, there is a positive and beneficial state that is completely opposite to this, and it is called cardiac coherence. Do you know what pattern the variability of the heart follows when it is in coherence? That’s right. It follows a sinusoidal pattern.
This is a well known and studied phenomenon. And the psycho-physiological benefits are vast.
This state is termed psychophysiological coherence, because it is characterized by increased order and harmony in both our psychological (mental and emotional) and physiological (bodily) processes. Psychophysiological coherence is state of optimal function. Research shows that when we activate this state, our physiological systems function more efficiently, we experience greater emotional stability, and we also have increased mental clarity and improved cognitive function. The Breathing Duality
The most important duality for human beings is the breath.
The yogis realized this long ago, and developed a whole system for exploring it in every possible and imaginary way. This system is called Prāṇāyāma, and it is one of the components of Yoga.
Because of its various benefits, it is often said that breathing rhythmically and consciously opens the door to the body’s “internal pharmacy,” that is, to its regenerative capacities.
Also, through these breathing techniques, it is possible to consciously access functions of the body that the modern world has always believed to be purely autonomous.

Breathing is much more than the simple act of filling and emptying the lungs. Breathing is literally embodying the most fundamental pattern of the universe (the primordial sinusoidal oscillation).
The word “spirit” comes from the Latin “spīritus”, meaning “to breathe” (source) The term Spirituality is thus born from the idea of Breathing. This is not a fact to be ignored.
Inhaling and Exhaling are themselves highly symbolic acts, and can represent many other dualities, but the easiest to understand is that of Life and Death.
Breathing in is Life, Energy (provided by the inspired oxygen), Inspiration, Work and Activity. Breathing in is the first thing we do when we come into the world.
To breathe out is Death, Relaxation, Absence of Energy, Dissolution, Surrender. It is the last thing we do before leaving the world.
In Prāṇāyāma there are many breathing techniques, many of them asymmetrical. Those who suffer from depression and low energy can focus on those that place more emphasis on Inspiration. Those suffering from chronic stress should focus on those that focus on Exhalation.
