{"id":431,"date":"2023-11-27T15:24:41","date_gmt":"2023-11-27T15:24:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sinewavelab.com\/sonofields\/?p=431"},"modified":"2026-02-11T23:25:05","modified_gmt":"2026-02-11T23:25:05","slug":"brain-waves-when-in-a-reflective-state-with-eyes-open","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sinewavelab.com\/sonofields\/brain-waves-when-in-a-reflective-state-with-eyes-open\/","title":{"rendered":"Brain waves when in a reflective state with eyes open"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>This page contains the data and analysis of a brain wave recording session I did using a <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3UP8onB\">Muse EEG Headband<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Session Characteristics<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>30\/09\/2023, 22:18<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I had slept a long nap and was feeling very calm and relaxed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I was lying down in bed with my eyes open.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This session was immediately followed by<a href=\"https:\/\/sinewavelab.com\/sonofields\/brain-waves-when-in-a-reflective-state-with-eyes-closed\/\"> Session 2<\/a>, which was similar in everything except it was done with closed eyes. For a more complete comparison between the two sessions, visit the Session 2 page.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">All Sensors<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Given that I had my eyes open, the large oscillations led by<mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-red-color\">Delta<\/mark>are most likely from blinking. These are signal artifacts and shouldn&#8217;t be taken into consideration.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sinewavelab.com\/sonofields\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/eeg-session-1-reflective-state-2.webp\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/sinewavelab.com\/sonofields\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/eeg-session-1-reflective-state-2.webp\" alt=\"\" style=\"width:1037px;height:auto\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Zooming into a more stable portion (the green rectangles), where no oscillations occur, we can see that<mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">Alpha<\/mark>was the most prominent frequency range during the session.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This relationship between frequencies looks more like what&#8217;s expected from a relaxed state (with<mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">Alpha,<\/mark>typically representing a more <em>idling<\/em> state, leading in dominance, while the faster<mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-green-cyan-color\">Beta<\/mark>and<mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-luminous-vivid-orange-color\">Gamma<\/mark>frequencies having the lowest dominance).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sinewavelab.com\/sonofields\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/eeg-session-1-reflective-state-02.webp\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/sinewavelab.com\/sonofields\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/eeg-session-1-reflective-state-02.webp\" alt=\"\" style=\"width:746px;height:auto\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Individual Sensors<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Looking into each individual sensor, the same frequency relationship can be found in the <strong>Back<\/strong> sensors (<strong>TP10<\/strong> and<strong> TP9<\/strong>).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In the <strong>Front<\/strong> sensors (<strong>AF7<\/strong>, <strong>AF8<\/strong>),<mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-red-color\">Delta<\/mark>dominates instead. This might be an overrepresentation caused by blinking.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>This is consistent with the fact that blinking artifacts are mostly detected in the front parts of the brain<sup data-fn=\"771398d0-479e-4bca-9b69-91f0d15eef96\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#771398d0-479e-4bca-9b69-91f0d15eef96\" id=\"771398d0-479e-4bca-9b69-91f0d15eef96-link\">1<\/a><\/sup>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/sinewavelab.com\/sonofields\/brain-waves-when-in-a-reflective-state-with-eyes-closed\/\">Session 2<\/a>, performed with eyes closed,  will provide additional insights into this. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Below is the smoothed-out data from each of the sensors:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure
