{"id":450,"date":"2023-11-27T15:25:40","date_gmt":"2023-11-27T15:25:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sinewavelab.com\/sonofields\/?p=450"},"modified":"2026-02-11T23:20:26","modified_gmt":"2026-02-11T23:20:26","slug":"brain-waves-while-playing-sudoku","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sinewavelab.com\/sonofields\/brain-waves-while-playing-sudoku\/","title":{"rendered":"Brain waves while playing Sudoku"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>This page contains the data and analysis of a brain wave recording session I did using a <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3UP8onB\">Muse EEG Headband<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Session Characteristics<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>02\/11\/2023, 16:52<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>During this session, I was playing a 9&#215;9 Sudoku game on paper.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In the middle of it, I got a bit sleepy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">All Sensors<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Even though looking at the data as is shown below is not very clear, we can still discern that:<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-luminous-vivid-orange-color\">Gamma<\/mark>has the lowest dominance throughout the whole session, and it&#8217;s separated into its own territory.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Over time,<mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-luminous-vivid-orange-color\">Gamma<\/mark>increases in energy, while other frequencies remain more stable. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>For a clearer picture let&#8217;s smooth out this activity.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sinewavelab.com\/sonofields\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/eeg-session-13-sudoku-05.webp\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"452\" src=\"https:\/\/sinewavelab.com\/sonofields\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/eeg-session-13-sudoku-05-1024x452.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3309\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sinewavelab.com\/sonofields\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/eeg-session-13-sudoku-05-1024x452.webp 1024w, https:\/\/sinewavelab.com\/sonofields\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/eeg-session-13-sudoku-05-300x132.webp 300w, https:\/\/sinewavelab.com\/sonofields\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/eeg-session-13-sudoku-05-768x339.webp 768w, https:\/\/sinewavelab.com\/sonofields\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/eeg-session-13-sudoku-05-1536x678.webp 1536w, https:\/\/sinewavelab.com\/sonofields\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/eeg-session-13-sudoku-05-600x265.webp 600w, https:\/\/sinewavelab.com\/sonofields\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/eeg-session-13-sudoku-05-280x124.webp 280w, https:\/\/sinewavelab.com\/sonofields\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/eeg-session-13-sudoku-05-1036x457.webp 1036w, https:\/\/sinewavelab.com\/sonofields\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/eeg-session-13-sudoku-05.webp 1661w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">All Sensors (Smoothed Out)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Smoothing out the frequency bands confirms what was mentioned in the previous section.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-luminous-vivid-orange-color\">Gamma<\/mark>and<mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-green-cyan-color\">Beta<\/mark>remain in lower dominance throughout the whole session, which seems to be unexpected since this session supposedly required some brain effort.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>However, since I mentioned I felt a bit sleepy during the middle of the session, that indicates that I was performing this task in a relaxed state. The nature of Sudoku does not require super-focused attention under a chronometer (like <a href=\"https:\/\/sinewavelab.com\/sonofields\/brain-waves-while-playing-brain-games\/\">Session 12<\/a>) so it&#8217;s possible to complete that activity while being more relaxed, which might explain the graphs we&#8217;re observing.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Still, looking at the sensor data from <em>all sensors <\/em>rarely tells the whole story, so next we&#8217;ll look into individual sensor data.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sinewavelab.com\/sonofields\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/eeg-session-13-sudoku-01.webp\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/sinewavelab.com\/sonofields\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/eeg-session-13-sudoku-01.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">AF7, AF8 and TP10 Sensors (Smoothed Out)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Looking at the <strong>Front-Left (AF7)<\/strong>, <strong>Front-Right (AF8),<\/strong> and <strong>Back-Right (TP10)<\/strong> sensors, we detect, overall, the same pattern.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>High<mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">Alpha<\/mark>dominance and low<mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-green-cyan-color\">Beta<\/mark>and<mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-luminous-vivid-orange-color\">Gamma<\/mark>dominance in all those quadrants seem to show that there is not much activation happening there. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-1 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a class=\"wp-block-heading\">Left-Back Sensor (TP9)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The only sensor left to analyze is the <strong>Left-Back (TP9)<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>We must find some form of higher activation in this part of the brain, otherwise, you probably won&#8217;t even believe I was able to solve the Sudoku game.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sinewavelab.com\/sonofields\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/eeg-session-13-sudoku-09.webp\"><img class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>And indeed that is what is observed in the graph above! \u2705<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>While<mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">Alpha<\/mark>is still dominant,<mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-green-cyan-color\">Beta<\/mark>clearly takes the second lead in dominance, and<mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-luminous-vivid-orange-color\">Gamma,<\/mark>even though it&#8217;s still the lowest dominant range, is much higher than in other quadrants, and helps form a tighter band comprised of all five frequencies.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This indicates that the brain power used for solving Sudoku was located mainly in the <strong>Left-Back <\/strong>quadrant. I&#8217;d say this is a result of my brain effort, but let&#8217;s not let the graph above fool us into thinking they were very dominant in those areas \u2014 the truth is, they were still the least dominant frequencies in AF7 and AF8.
