{"id":468,"date":"2023-11-27T15:26:00","date_gmt":"2023-11-27T15:26:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sinewavelab.com\/sonofields\/?p=468"},"modified":"2026-02-11T23:17:43","modified_gmt":"2026-02-11T23:17:43","slug":"brain-waves-while-dish-washing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sinewavelab.com\/sonofields\/brain-waves-while-dish-washing\/","title":{"rendered":"Brain waves while dish-washing"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>This page contains the data and analysis of a brain wave recording session I did using a <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3UP8onB\">Muse EEG Headband<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Session Characteristics<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>09\/11\/2023, 15:40<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>During this session, I was washing the dishes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>No phone or media playing while I was doing it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Occasionally, mostly in the beginning, some things were happening around me that were making me feel a bit stressed out. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">All Sensors<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>There are some regular<mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-red-color\">Delta<\/mark>peaks throughout the session. Although not shown in the chart, if we inspect each sensor individually, we&#8217;ll see that these peaks are in the <strong>Front sensors (AF7, AF8)<\/strong> and not so much in the <strong>Back<\/strong>. This is evidence that these Delta peaks are caused by blinking, and should be ignored. Are they related to blinking and the<mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-red-color\">Delta<\/mark>peaks as well? Based on <a href=\"https:\/\/sinewavelab.com\/sonofields\/brain-waves-when-blinking\/\">a previous analysis I&#8217;ve done dedicated to blinking artifacts<\/a>, I would not say it is\u2014 what I observed in that previous session was the faster frequencies are stabler and have lower amplitude oscillations when reacting to blinking, and only in the frontal sensors. Here<mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-luminous-vivid-amber-color\">Gamma<\/mark>seems particularly volatile, so I&#8217;d say this is being caused by something else.   <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Without any notes regarding what happened at specific times, it&#8217;s impossible to reach specific conclusions regarding those peaks. For instance, if I had a note saying that 3:42 PM is the time when something stressed me out, then we could make that connection. Since those specific notes don&#8217;t exist, we&#8217;ll smooth out the data and focus on the broader picture instead.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">All Sensors (Smoothed Out)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Averaging out all the details, we can analyze trends instead.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>While the slower frequency bands (<mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-red-color\">Delta<\/mark>, <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-purple-color\">Theta<\/mark>,<mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">Alpha<\/mark>) remain stable or slightly increase, the faster ones (<mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-green-cyan-color\">Beta<\/mark> and <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-luminous-vivid-orange-color\">Gamma<\/mark>) decrease.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The arrows show this, and also how the overall frequency band broadens when this happens.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Taking into consideration 1.) my notes mentioning stressful events during the <em>first part<\/em> of the session, and 2.) I was not engaged in mental effort activities, then all that was left in the second part of the session was a relaxed, idling activity, and the graph looks as I would expect it \u2014 slower frequencies on top, faster frequencies at the bottom, with a greater divide between them than in the <em>first part<\/em>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sinewavelab.com\/sonofields\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/eeg-session-22-dish-washing-04_v02.webp\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"537\" src=\"https:\/\/sinewavelab.com\/sonofields\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/eeg-session-22-dish-washing-04_v02-1024x537.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3451\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sinewavelab.com\/sonofields\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/eeg-session-22-dish-washing-04_v02-1024x537.webp 1024w, https:\/\/sinewavelab.com\/sonofields\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/eeg-session-22-dish-washing-04_v02-300x157.webp 300w, https:\/\/sinewavelab.com\/sonofields\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/eeg-session-22-dish-washing-04_v02-768x403.webp 768w, https:\/\/sinewavelab.com\/sonofields\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/eeg-session-22-dish-washing-04_v02-600x315.webp 600w, https:\/\/sinewavelab.com\/sonofields\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/eeg-session-22-dish-washing-04_v02-280x147.webp 280w, https:\/\/sinewavelab.com\/sonofields\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/eeg-session-22-dish-washing-04_v02-1036x543.webp 1036w, https:\/\/sinewavelab.com\/sonofields\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/eeg-session-22-dish-washing-04_v02.webp 1525w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Uncommon Activity Detected<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>After analyzing for more interesting EEG data, I found some in the <strong>Back-Right sensor (TP10)<\/strong>, pertaining to<mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">Alpha<\/mark>dominance.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The graph shown below shows how&nbsp;<em>dominant&nbsp;<\/em>frequencies were across the session, in %.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>As is visually shown, there is a clear moment in time where<mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">Alpha<\/mark>dominance changes behavior and assumes higher and more sustained levels of dominance.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>High, sustained <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">Alpha<\/mark> dominance is to be expected when someone, in a calm state, closes their eyes.
