By doing so, you will acquire a new tool to better handle <strong>stress<\/strong> and <strong>anxiety <\/strong>and improve your ability to <strong>fall asleep<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Breathing is the perfect example of mathematical spirituality because breathing can be:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Very <strong>spiritual<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Very <strong>mathematical<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>So, let\u2019s talk about breathing through the lens of Mathematical Spirituality:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Part 1: Breathing as a Spiritual Concept<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The connection between <strong>breathing<\/strong> and <strong>spirituality<\/strong> is not anything new. It is a very ancient connection, in fact. For instance:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Pranayama<\/strong> is a component of <strong>Yoga<\/strong> that focuses on controlling the <strong>breath<\/strong> for <strong>spiritual<\/strong> purposes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In <strong>Buddhism<\/strong>, the practice <strong>Anapanasati<\/strong> is used to connect the mind and body through <strong>breathing mindfulness<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In some <strong>Indigenous practices<\/strong>, breath is believed to have <strong>healing powers<\/strong> and is an integral part of certain rituals.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Breathing is also a <strong>duality<\/strong> between <strong>inspiration<\/strong> and <strong>expiration<\/strong>, and dualities are already themselves deeply spiritual concepts, you simply have to consider the Yin Yang symbol as proof of that.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sinewavelab.com\/sonofields\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/pranayama.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/sinewavelab.com\/sonofields\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/pranayama-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4995\" style=\"width:819px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sinewavelab.com\/sonofields\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/pranayama-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/sinewavelab.com\/sonofields\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/pranayama-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sinewavelab.com\/sonofields\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/pranayama-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/sinewavelab.com\/sonofields\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/pranayama-600x338.jpg 600w, https:\/\/sinewavelab.com\/sonofields\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/pranayama-280x158.jpg 280w, https:\/\/sinewavelab.com\/sonofields\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/pranayama-1036x583.jpg 1036w, https:\/\/sinewavelab.com\/sonofields\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/pranayama.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>As far as the human being is concerned, the breathing duality is the one that concerns him the most, as his life literally depends on it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And symbolically, it contains symbolism as profound as the one found in the Yin \/ Yang.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Inhalation<\/strong> represents <em>Life<\/em>, <em>Energy <\/em>(which is literally provided by the inspired oxygen), <em>Inspiration<\/em>, <em>Work<\/em>, and <em>Activity<\/em>. It is the activation of the sympathetic nervous system. It is the first thing we do when we come into the world.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Exhalation<\/strong> represents <em>Death<\/em>, <em>Relaxation<\/em>, <em>Absence of Energy<\/em>, <em>Release<\/em> and <em>Letting Go<\/em>. It is the activation of the parasympathetic nervous system. It is the last thing we do before we die.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, the English word &#8220;<strong>spirit<\/strong>&#8221; derives from the Latin spiritus, meaning &#8220;breath&#8221;. In fact, even today, the words <strong>&#8220;respiration&#8221;<\/strong> and <strong>&#8220;spirituality<\/strong>&#8221; still share some similarity between themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And in Hebrew, the word &#8220;<strong>ruach<\/strong>&#8221; and in Greek, &#8220;<strong>pneuma<\/strong>&#8221; both mean breath and spirit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These are the connections between breathing and spirituality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now we move on to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Part 2: Breathing as a Mathematical Idea<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In certain fields of <strong>Mathematics<\/strong>, it is very common to deal with <strong>wave forms<\/strong> like the <em>sine<\/em>, <em>triangle<\/em>, the <em>square wave<\/em>, and others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sinewavelab.com\/sonofields\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/some-types-of-waves.webp\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"436\" src=\"https:\/\/sinewavelab.com\/sonofields\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/some-types-of-waves-1024x436.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4438\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sinewavelab.com\/sonofields\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/some-types-of-waves-1024x436.webp 1024w, https:\/\/sinewavelab.com\/sonofields\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/some-types-of-waves-300x128.webp 300w, https:\/\/sinewavelab.com\/sonofields\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/some-types-of-waves-768x327.webp 768w, https:\/\/sinewavelab.com\/sonofields\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/some-types-of-waves-600x255.webp 600w, https:\/\/sinewavelab.com\/sonofields\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/some-types-of-waves-280x119.webp 280w, https:\/\/sinewavelab.com\/sonofields\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/some-types-of-waves-1036x441.webp 1036w, https:\/\/sinewavelab.com\/sonofields\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/some-types-of-waves.webp 1038w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Breathing <\/strong>can be connected to Mathematics by the fact that it can be plotted as a <strong>waveform <\/strong>onto a graph that shows the lung&#8217;s air volume.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By using our <strong>conscious <\/strong>thought, we can control our breath to draw specific shapes, like the ones mentioned before. And everything vibrates! Whether you believe in <em>Quantum Field Theory<\/em>, <em>String Theory<\/em>, or some other theory, all of them point to <strong>something that vibrates<\/strong> at the <strong>most fundamental level of Realit<\/strong>y (e.g. a <em>quantum field<\/em> or a <em>string<\/em>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In other words, sine waves can be seen as the <strong>building blocks<\/strong> of Reality. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is why the <strong>sine wave<\/strong> is the shape we&#8217;ll choose as the <em>basis<\/em> of our <strong>breathing technique<\/strong>. Because if we breathe following a sinusoidal pattern, we are <em>incorporating<\/em> the most fundamental of shapes. And I mean <em>incorporating<\/em> in its literal sense because we\u2019d be doing it <em>quite literally<\/em> with our <strong>bodies<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Part 3: The Sinusoidal Heart<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>So far, we&#8217;ve seen that if we <strong>breathe <\/strong>following a <strong>sinusoidal pattern<\/strong>, our <strong>lungs<\/strong> will draw that pattern onto a graph.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, that is only the <strong>first step<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is known that:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Breathing-in<\/strong> makes the heart rate <strong>accelerate<\/strong>, by momentarily making the <strong>sympathetic nervous system <\/strong>dominate.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Breathing-out<\/strong> makes the heart rate <strong>decelerate<\/strong>, by momentarily making the <strong>parasympathetic nervous system<\/strong> dominate.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If we plot these heart rate accelerations and decelerations onto a graph, we end up with something known as the <strong>Heart-Rate Variability<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During <strong>unconscious <\/strong>breathing, negative emotions or stress, this graph would be <strong>erratic<\/strong> and <strong>unstable<\/strong>. This might sound like a bad thing, but having a heart capable of doing this is actually a sign of health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And through breathing, there is a way we can achieve this state of increased amplitude.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our bodies have a mechanism known as the <strong>baroreflex response<\/strong>, responsible for regulating our <em>blood pressure<\/em>, <em>heart-rate<\/em> and <em>blood vessel<\/em> constriction and dilation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By<em> breathing like a sine wave<\/em> at a <strong>frequency<\/strong> that matches the <em>baroreflex\u2019s own natural resonant frequency<\/em>, we can <strong>stimulate it<\/strong> to increase its response, and, as a result, <strong>increase the amplitude<\/strong> of the <em>heart-rate variability<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You might ask, what special frequency is that. For the average person, that frequency is <strong>0.1 Hz<\/strong>, or <strong>6 breaths per second<\/strong>. However, it can have slight variations, based on the person&#8217;s height. Personally, I decided to measure mine, just to be sure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Measuring My Baroreflex Resonant Frequency<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>To measure my resonant frequency, I bought a special chest strap that not only records my <strong>heart-rate<\/strong> but also its <strong>heart-rate variability<\/strong>, and then I connected it to a free app that allowed me to conduct some tests at different frequencies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I found out that <strong>0.11 Hz<\/strong> resulted in the <em>highest <\/em>heart-rate variability scores, so that&#8217;s my resonant frequency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019d like to know what<strong> your own resonant frequency<\/strong> is, read this article I wrote: <a href=\"https:\/\/sinewavelab.com\/sonofields\/find-your-heart-rate-variability-resonance-frequency\/\">Find Your Heart-Rate Variability Resonant Frequency<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now I know that if I breathe at 0.11 Hz, I am entering into a state of <strong>maximum benefit<\/strong>, both for the <em>body <\/em>and the <em>mind<\/em>. I also know that I am in a state of <strong>complete mathematical alignment<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Respiratory, Blood Pressure, and Cardiac Phase Alignment<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>That&#8217;s right. When we breathe at our resonant frequency, we enter into a state of <strong>complete mathematical alignment<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To explain what this means, let me repeat what I mentioned previously: when we breathe like a <em>sine wave<\/em>, our <strong>breath<\/strong>, our <strong>heart rate <\/strong>and our <strong>blood pressure <\/strong>all behave like smooth and predictable <em>sine waves<\/em> as well. It&#8217;s an intriguing thing to observe &#8211; at minute 5 you feel like it will be <em>impossible<\/em> for your mind to shut down, and yet, 10 minutes later, you&#8217;ve <strong>fallen asleep<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4.1.3 Save Time<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Using this technique to fall asleep also has the benefit of <strong>not requiring taking extra time<\/strong> out of the day to achieve an harmonious sinusoidal state.
