Brain waves while dish-washing

This page contains the data and analysis of a brain wave recording session I did using a Muse EEG Headband.

Session Characteristics

  • 09/11/2023, 15:40
  • During this session, I was washing the dishes.
  • No phone or media playing while I was doing it.
  • Occasionally, mostly in the beginning, some things were happening around me that were making me feel a bit stressed out.

All Sensors

  • There are some regularDeltapeaks throughout the session. Although not shown in the chart, if we inspect each sensor individually, we’ll see that these peaks are in the Front sensors (AF7, AF8) and not so much in the Back. This is evidence that these Delta peaks are caused by blinking, and should be ignored. It also means thatDeltadominance will be over-represented.
  • We can also see that the other frequencies also peak regularly. Are they related to blinking and theDeltapeaks as well? Based on a previous analysis I’ve done dedicated to blinking artifacts, I would not say it is— what I observed in that previous session was the faster frequencies are stabler and have lower amplitude oscillations when reacting to blinking, and only in the frontal sensors. HereGammaseems particularly volatile, so I’d say this is being caused by something else.
  • Without any notes regarding what happened at specific times, it’s impossible to reach specific conclusions regarding those peaks. For instance, if I had a note saying that 3:42 PM is the time when something stressed me out, then we could make that connection. Since those specific notes don’t exist, we’ll smooth out the data and focus on the broader picture instead.

All Sensors (Smoothed Out)

  • Averaging out all the details, we can analyze trends instead.
  • While the slower frequency bands (Delta, Theta,Alpha) remain stable or slightly increase, the faster ones (Beta and Gamma) decrease.
  • The arrows show this, and also how the overall frequency band broadens when this happens.
  • Taking into consideration 1.) my notes mentioning stressful events during the first part of the session, and 2.) I was not engaged in mental effort activities, then all that was left in the second part of the session was a relaxed, idling activity, and the graph looks as I would expect it — slower frequencies on top, faster frequencies at the bottom, with a greater divide between them than in the first part.

Uncommon Activity Detected

  • After analyzing for more interesting EEG data, I found some in the Back-Right sensor (TP10), pertaining toAlphadominance.
  • The graph shown below shows how dominant frequencies were across the session, in %.
  • As is visually shown, there is a clear moment in time whereAlphadominance changes behavior and assumes higher and more sustained levels of dominance.
  • High, sustained Alpha dominance is to be expected when someone, in a calm state, closes their eyes. However, that wasn’t the case, and in this session, this phenomenon was also mostly restricted to the TP10 sensor, while closing the eyes would induce an effect across both back sensors.
  • This is the first time I have encountered such behavior.
