Brain waves while listening to Beta + Gamma Isochronic Tones (NEX27)

This page contains the data and analysis of a brain wave recording session I did using a Muse EEG Headband.

Session Characteristics

Key Insights

  • + 50%Thetadominance
  • + 50%Betadominance
  • + 50%Gammadominance
  • Beta+Gammabrain wave phase coherence

All Sensors

  • This session comes up as the first after a long sequence of sessions focused on theThetafrequency range. In those sessions, a trend was detected:Thetawas almost always the second most dominant frequency. Now that tracks in new frequencies are being tried out, new frequency relationships are unlocked more easily. In this session, we see howBetaassumes second-place dominance.
  • It is uncommon to seeBetawith second-place dominance in the All Sensors section, especially during a session that is not focused on mental effort. Yet, that’s what we observe here. That points to the effectiveness of the isochronic tones ✅
  • I should note thatBeta’ssecond-place dominance is shown in the Left Hemisphere, the Right Hemisphere, and in the Front. Let’s take a closer look at those places.

Front, Left Sensor (AF7)

  • As we see,Betadominates the Front-Left (AF7) quadrant, occupying first place. This is the type of activity expected in high mental effort activities. A higherGammadominance, like observed here, is also indicative of this.
  • Since this session does not consist of performing high mental effort activities, the highBeta andGammadominance observed in this session is highly likely a result of listening to the isochronic tones ✅

Front, Right Sensor (AF8)

  • On the Front-Right (AF8) quadrant, a similar pattern is observed, even though Alphatakes the dominance lead sometimes.
  • Unlike AF7,Gammagains dominance towards the end of the session.

Right-Back Sensor (TP10)

  • Looking at the Right-Back quadrant, some signs of entrainment can be found ✅
  • First, theGammafrequency range oscillates in a predictable sinusoidal, orderly pattern, in a way that hasn’t been observed outside any brainwave entrainment session.
  • Secondly, BetaandGamma are phase-locked, with their peaks and valleys aligned.
  • For reference, this is what a non-sinusoidal, more chaoticGammaactivity looks like.

How Does Dominance Change Over Time?

The graphs shown below show how dominant frequencies were across the session, in %.

  • Here are the most relevant changes;
  • BetaandGamma increased in dominance by an average of 40-50% across All Sensors
  • Deltadecreased in dominance by an average of 40% across All Sensors.
  • Alpha decreased in dominance by an average of 12% across Front Sensors.
  • Thetadecreased in dominance by 55% in the Front-Right Sensor.

Quadrant Energy Levels (Overview)

Centers of Gravity (Overview)

For reference: the circle with the black circumference marks the central area of the brain. Activity inside it is more central and symmetrical; outside is more asymmetrical.

Centers of Gravity (More Specific)

The section above provides an overview of the centers of gravity for each brainwave frequency. Occasionally, we find that certain centers of gravity develop a trend over time, and that’s always interesting to investigate further with additional graphs. For this session, we have:

  • In the right hemisphere specifically, Gamma’scenter of gravity shifted from the back towards the front.
    • Comment: this seems particularly interesting, because frequencies tend to have more energy in the back. I would attribute this the entrainment track. This behavior has been observed in other entrainment tracks as well.
  • In the front part of the brain specifically, Gamma’scenter of gravity shifted from the left towards the right.
    • Comment: This behavior has been observed in other entrainment tracks. However I have no specific interpretation or comment about the practical implications of this change.
