Brain waves while playing brain games

This page contains the data and analysis of a brain wave recording session I did using a Muse EEG Headband.

Session Characteristics

  • 02/11/2023
  • During this session, I was playing the brain app Luminosity, namely 3 types of games:
    • Attention/Multi-tasking
    • Visual speed matching,
    • Visual memory matrix.
  • It was challenging and I felt my brain pulsating.

All Sensors

  • Even though looking at the data as is shown below is not very clear, we can still discern that:
  • Gammahas the lowest dominance throughout the whole session, and it’s somewhat separated into its own territory.
  • The overall energy levels of all frequency bands decrease over time.
  • Gammashows a lot of variability sometimes (high-amplitude oscillations), and sometimes it’s more controlled.
  • However, this raises the question — how did the other brainwave frequencies behave in terms of variability?
  • By isolating each frequency band independently, we can get a clearer answer.
  • As you can see, in terms of energy levels,Delta,Theta, andAlphashow higher levels of stability and consistency throughout the session, whileBetashows a bit less andGammaeven less.
  • Notice how after 12:33,Delta and Theta, while still stable in terms of overall energy levels, change behavior. More specifically, their oscillations increase in amplitude, and they also don’t occur as often.
    • Could this behavior reflect me playing a different game?
    • In fact, I think based on how brain wave activity changes, that the times when I changed games was 12:30:45 and then either 12:33:00 or perhaps 12:34:30.

All Sensors (Smoothed Out)

  • Smoothing the data from all sensors allows us to uncover an interesting detail — Delta,Theta, andBeta are forming an intertwined tight band throughout the session. I haven’t observed this type of brain wave activity in other sessions so far.

Left-Back Sensor (TP9, Smoothed Out)

  • The activity from other individual sensors (AF7, AF8, TP10) all have the same characteristics as the graph shown above. It is in the Left-Back sensor (TP9) where we find something different.
  • Here, a different pattern emerges –AlphaandBetaform a dominant band, clearly separated from a lower band constituted by Delta,Theta, andGamma.
    • Gamma, while in last place of dominance, still has more energy in this quadrant than in any other.
  • This seems to indicate that whatever brain computation was required, it was occurring more intensely in the Left-Back quadrant. This is the first session I recorded where brain effort was mostly occurring in the Left-Back quadrant, instead of the Left-Front quadrant.

Brainwave Lateralization According to Each Game

Below we can see a peculiar behavior regarding the Left/Right energy level balance ofAlpha,BetaandGamma. The other frequencies are not included because they are fairly balanced across all games.

In the image below:

  1. Each colored circle represents each of the three games being played.
  2. The first line showAlpha,BetaandGamma left/right balance at the front sensors (AF7 or AF8).
  3. The bottom line showAlpha,BetaandGamma left/right balance at the back sensors (TP9 or TP10).
  • The most interesting thing that stands out immediately is that in the frontal cortex,BetaandGammastart more on the left (AF7) and with each game they trend towards the center.
  • On the back, however, they remain strong in the left-back TP9 quadrant (as explained in the previous session).

This means that for each game, we have the following configuration:

GameAlpha (Front)Beta (Front)Gamma (Front)Alpha (Back)Beta (Back)Gamma (Back)

Centers of Gravity (Overview)

For reference: the circle marks the central area of the brain. Activity inside it is more central and symmetrical; outside is more asymmetrical.
