I recorded this music track as part of a tutorial on how to used my software SLModes.
The idea is to explore the concept of interscalar modal modulation, and come up with unusual chord progressions.
The main chord progression used in this track is C minor and C#7. This may seem like a simple chord progression, and it is.
But the secret is that on top of those chords, the modes being used are C Aeolian and C# Lydian Dominant. These two modes are not that much related to each other, and so they are not used together that often. Regardless, SLModes quickly showed them as sounding very nice when used together, and so I choose them.
Towards the end of the song, I also use a very specific type of interscalar modal modulation known as pitch axis: you keep the same root note, but jump to a different mode in a different scale. In this song in particular, it was going from G Aeolian to G Lydian Dominant.
