Description
Unlike Supercharged! which has been described as a “straightforward” and “fun song to play”, the two tracks that belong to the “Darkest Strings” EP are the complete opposite of that.
They are complex.
They are not fun to play.
They are serious.
And they are like that because they are a representation of the period of my life between 2008-2012.
The Darkest Strings Chord Progression
Six years before I released my software SLModes, I was already recording music using the so-called “interscalar modal modulation” concept.
The one used in “The Darkest Strings, Part 2” is one I am particularly proud of. It sounds so unique, and mysterious, and speaks to me on a personal level. Which is a good thing, because this is a very personal song.
What I created was a chord progression comprised of only two chords (I’m a big fan of these). After some investigation, I determined that the chords are:
- C7#11b13
- G#maj7#5.
And the modes played over them are:
- C Altered (that’s a mode of the Melodic Minor scale)
- G# Lydian.
This is how they sound when played on a piano:
And this is how the chords sound played on a guitar:
This unusual jump between such chords and modes is very obscure and unique. I wouldn’t be surprised if no-one has used such combination before. In fact, I’m just going to go ahead and name it the “Darkest Strings chord progression” – you heard it here first! 🙂
